U.S. Farm Subsidies Favor Big Over Small, White Over Black.”:http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/19/AR2007061902193.html?hpid=topnews “From 2001 to 2005, the federal government spent nearly $1.2 billion in agricultural subsidies to boost farmers’ incomes and invigorate local economies in this poverty-stricken region of the Mississippi Delta. Most residents are black, but less than 5 percent of the money went to black farmers. They own relatively little land, and so they generally do not qualify for the payments. Ninety-five percent of the money went to large, commercial farms, virtually all of which have white owners.” Washington Post (6/20/07)

But in the last year, they quietly have been winning much of what they’ve wanted on a case-by-case basis in the Supreme Court. With a week to go in their term, the justices have handed down a dozen rulings that sharply limit the damages that can be won in lawsuits or make it harder to sue corporations.” Los Angeles Times (6/21/07)
“Rich, White Property Owners Disproportionately Hurt by Eminent Domain Abuse”:http://www.reason.com/blog/show/120920.html “Just kidding. A new report from the Institute for Justice finds that residents of areas targeted for private economic development projects that rely on eminent domain are poorer, less educated, and less likely to be white than people in surrounding communities. In 184 areas where the use of eminent domain was approved, the median income was about $19,000, 34 percent of adults had less than a high school diploma, and 58 percent of residents were members of minority groups. The corresponding numbers for nearby neighborhoods were $23,000, 24 percent, and 45 percent, respectively.” reason (6/20/07)

“The end of the line”:http://www.salon.com/mwt/food/eat_drink/2007/06/20/clover_qa/ Interview. Author Charles Clover on the scourge of overfishing, disgraceful restaurants, and yes, sustainable McDonald’s. Clover has been monitoring the oceans since the late 1980s. His book, ‘The End of the Line: How Overfishing Is Changing the World and What We Eat,’ was published in the United States last year but, sadly, was met with a deafening lack of attention. That’s a shame, because Clover presents a compendium of how precisely we are eating our way through the seas. Scientists reported last year that fish would be gone from the oceans by 2048 if this behavior goes unchecked – though Clover points out that it’s not as if the seas will be empty. In the absence of all the fish we’ve eaten, we’ll also experience a surfeit of species like jellyfish because biodiversity has been undone.’ Salon (6/20/07)
