Mugabe secures two-thirds majority
Now Mugabe can name a succesor to his own ‘trown’ without having to call for elections and he can make sure he will not have to face possible criminal charges against him in the future. This could very well be the end of democracy in Zimbabwe.
Yesterday I was wondering about South Africa’s role in this story. President Mbeki called the Zimbabwean elections “free and fair” while evidence shows otherwise. Why would he do that? I gave two possible explenations: one: he doesn’t want a civil war on his doorstep that could lead to an exodus of refugees and two: he doesn’t want to be regarded as a ‘lapdog’ of the West. But there is an other one. The Zanu-PF have been the leading political party in Zimbabwe since independance, just like the ANC have been in SA. Maybe Mbeki doesn’t like change in southren Africa. Like I said yesterday: it reeks of selfpreservation.

President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party secured a two-thirds majority on Saturday, winning 71 seats which along with 30 seats appointed directly by the president carried it to a major victory.
Mugabe (81) will be able to rewrite the constitution unopposed, that could help him prepare his retirement, expected in 2008. The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) won 39 seats in the parliamentary elections held on Thursday, according to incomplete results.

“We do not accept that this represents the national sentiment,” said Tsvangirai. “The government has fraudulently, once again, betrayed the people. We believe that the people of Zimbabwe must defend their vote and their right to free and fair elections.”
“He (Mugabe) is going to do what he wants, this is his private property and for people to even claim that this is a democratic process, when it is so fraudulent, is totally not acceptable,...

Wow, funny how these Idi Amin types always manage to handily win their elections.
Funny how yall cant get off Mugabe’s dick. If it werent for him there would be a post-colonial puppet in his place doing worse to the people while the whole while the western media would remain silent. Since its a native man ruling his own country kicking out white colonists the western media villifies the man. Long live Mugabe and black-rule in black lands.
