Summary:

Lower-than-average rainfall and record levels of parched vegetation likely mean a long, fiery summer throughout northern California, according to the Forest Service’s state fire outlook released last week.

The surrounding ponderosa pine forest has a large number of dead trees, victims of a bark beetle infestation that has killed millions of trees across the West in recent years.

We told you so.

Wildfire season in California appears to be unaware of smoking bans

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – More than a thousand wildfires – including a massive, stubborn blaze in the Big Sur region – were burning early Monday in Northern California and there was no relief in sight for weary firefighters.

Fire crews inched closer to getting some of the largest of 1,420 blazes surrounded, according to the state Office of Emergency Services. Some 364,600 acres – or almost 570 square miles – have burned.

But a “red flag warning” – meaning the most extreme fire danger – was still in effect for Northern California until 8 a.m. EDT Monday. And the weather in the coming days and months isn’t expected to help efforts.

yeah. well…

did we forget there are natural burning cycles which take place annually among “nature?” or did we encroach on the land, fuck up ecosystems and natural cycles and then get mad when our houses burn and our trees fall?

related rant from a year ago: let it burn

Don’t die protecting other people’s unnecessary stuff. Or your own. Die making big boom for assholes instead.

The blazes were just enormous this year. Normally we can see all the way across the valley. This year, we could only see a mile out, and then it was extremely smokey. One would think with all these large-scale fires that the build up of organic material would be nonexistent, but it gets worse every year. Eventually the state’s going to have to figure out some way to implement a clearing out of the organic matter by fire, or other means for the entire state.

Coincidence or paranoia. Forest mismanagement or war on drugs? California fires by county C.A.M.P.

California is also experiencing a drought. Although reservoirs are fully stocked, will the water go to the people/agriculture/manufacturing or will it go to the fires? I am sure they will just rather dump toxic fire retardant.

Blueberries grow wild on burned soil. Trade nuts for berries.

bad forest and fire management in general has also contributed to the problem.

gonna take some real new funky ideas to fix this one.

remember kids, “radical is reasonable” – the scientists said so (climate code red)!

After hearing “whats her names” statement about the earthquake and floods being punishment for the oppression and slaughter of Tibetan monks by the Chinese i wondered if the fires, flood, famine, etc. were punishment to the US for its exploitation of the world…
