Palestinians mark the 'Nakba'
As I write this, President Bush is finishing off a speech to the Israeli Knesset to mark 60 years of Israeli statehood, but he will not be focusing a great deal on Palestinian dispossession.
Words like “Israel’s population may be just over seven million. But when you confront terror and evil, you are 307 million strong, because America stands with you” will hearten a certain stratum of Israeli society but will appall Palestinians and their supporters, who continue to struggle to separate the human rights of a people from their collective designation as terrorists.
As Al Jazeera reports here, Bush’s florid gestures of support come as rumors circulate of an impending Israeli assault upon the Gaza Strip – a fitting present to mark the Nakba.

Palestinians have held protests across the occupied territories to mark the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe”, when they were uprooted from their homes by the establishment of Israel.
In the West Bank on Thrusday, rallies and sirens commemorated the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the 1948 war.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, speaking from Ramallah, called for an end to occupation and settlement building.
