Summary:

Is Israel about to start a war with Iran? Will the U.S. come to its ally’s aid? Many, including Jonathan Cook, think so.

Jonathan Cook is a writer and journalist based in Nazareth, Israel. His book, Blood and Religion: The Unmasking of the Jewish and Democratic State, is published by Pluto Press. His website is www.jkcook.net.

The Middle East, & possibly the world, stands on the brink of a terrible conflagration as Israel & the U.S. prepare to deal with Iran's alleged ambition to acquire nuclear weapons.

Israel, it becomes clearer by the day, wants to use its air force to deliver a knock-out blow against Tehran. It is not known whether it will use conventional weapons or a nuclear warhead in such a strike.

At this potentially cataclysmic moment in global politics, it is good to see that one of the world’s leading broadcasters, the BBC, decided this week that it should air a documentary entitled “Will Israel bomb Iran?”. It is the question on everyone’s lips and doubtless, with the imprimatur of the BBC, the programme will sell around the world.

The good news ends there, however. Because the programme addresses none of the important issues raised by Israel’s increasingly belligerent posture towards Tehran.

It does not explain that, without a United Nations resolution, a military strike on Iran to destroy its nuclear research programme would be a gross violation of international law.

It does not clarify that Israel’s own large nuclear arsenal was secretly developed and is entirely unmonitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency, or that it is perceived as a threat by its neighbours and may be fuelling a Middle East arms race.

Nor does the programme detail the consequences of an Israeli strike on instability and…

Not having seen the doc, I can’t pass too much judgement on it. However, from the article, it certainly puts forward a good argument that the programme is Israeli propaganda. I’m more than a bit hacked off if this is the case. I don’t pay my licence fee to line Noam Shalev’s pockets.

I think I would have much preferred Dispatches from Channel 4 (UK) to have made a programme titled “Will Israel Bomb Iran”.

tenbob @ 10/13/06 00:33:51

When Bush loses Congress in November, all GW will have to do is give the IDF the green light and it’ll be on with Iran, whether the Congress is willing to fund another war or not.

The Iranians know that the Israelis can’t hit them without US complicity and will undoubtedly strike back against US troops and assets in the region.

The first US casualty caused by an Iranian counterstrike will put Congress and bulk of the American public squarely behind the “Commander in Chief” and that’ll be the end of any “lame duck” talk in Washington.

The entire global economy will be at stake and George W. Bush will be at the helm.

Saving civilization.

Sometimes no Peace,

It is not known whether it will use conventional weapons or a nuclear warhead in such a strike.

What he means, this Jonathan Cook chap, is that ‘he’ doesn’t know, not “it is not known”. There is a huge difference.

This kind of speculation is in lieu of facts. Everyone is intitled to speculate, facts on the other hand can be verified or at least if there is ambiguity, the quality of the sources can be verified.

So his sepculation goes like.

Look at me, I know that the US and Israel is evil and causes all bad in the world, now, let’s discuss though speculation, what I think Israel is going to do. Permit to speculate in such a way that would tend to validate my belief that Israel is bad.

Next year in the 7th year of the new century there will pass a great attack by the evil Jews until the peaceful and wise nation to the east…...

And there shall be created a great bourse in that peaceful nation of the East that will bring down the economy of the great capitalist empire of the west. And this empire shall attack with great fury to protect its wealth….

Do you not see the worthlessness of this wild speculation is? It is a fictional tale loosely based on a particular pre-disposed world view.

I predicted a week ago Israel will do this, and it will spark World War III.

Don’t say i didn’t warn you all.

U.S, E.U, and other zionist controlled countries will go to war against Iran, their allies Russia, China, etc.

WWIII is coming. You ready?

Wednesday @ 10/13/06 06:39:58

hey all this could easily be averted. You know it, I know it. If people of so-called “democracies” who champion the value of life want to look the other way while their governments bring down flaming walls of feces around their ears, then they deserve it. I never held much esteem for Empire anyway. Having grown up during the Cold War, I have kind of been half-expecting WWIII since like 1983 anyway, and having not adequately prepared for retirement, I say go right ahead, Fundie assholes. Push the fucking button. I’m moving to Amsterdam.

Here are some facts that make your prediction unlikely to occur.

1. Iran is not a strong country capable of waging war on a large scale.
2. Other superpowers will not want to start a world war against the United States over Iran and especially not Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
3. The US, nor the EU, are not controlled by Israel.
4. China and Russia are not Iran’s allies.

nobinPoddywodder @ 10/13/06 08:45:15

Iran is not a strong country capable of waging war on a large scale

What are you basing that on?

nogunri @ 10/13/06 11:03:16

“Iran is not a strong country capable of waging war on a large scale”

That is what Germany said about Russia after they lost the first winter war with Finland.

Wednesday @ 10/13/06 11:10:20

So this is the ace up Bush’s sleve? As the corruption becomes unavoidably clear to sleepy U.S. citizens and Bush’s administration appears bound for its end, he can OK an Israeli strike, which will seem reasonable after all the recent propaganda he’s generated on Iranian nukes. The zionists strike Iran, Iran hits back at Israel and U.S. holdings in Iraq/Afghanistan, and the show is on. Bush can then declare national emergency (the U.S. is bound by treaty to assist Israel) without congressional approval and round up people like us.
However, Russia and China will kick his (and our) ass and from the rubble, a new world order will emerge, but not the one Bush hopes for. Meanwhile, too bad for us and everyone else. Ah well, fuckit.

gazoobi @ 10/13/06 11:48:50

(that Iran is not very strong militartily) What are you basing that on?

Common sense.

1. The Iran-Iraq War 1980-86
2. Industrial base, non-crude oil GDP
3. Lack of any sophisticated weapons systems and reliance on aging hardware 20-40 years out of date.
4. No Airforce, no Navy, or at least not ones that could survive 24 hours against a US assault.
5. Polulation with questionable loyalties. Most of the middle class has had their fill of the religious fanatics who run the country.
6. An economy totally dependent on windfall crude oil revenues for survival. Almost their entire crude shipments go through one Island called Kharq Island exposed in the Gulf, easy to either destroy or occupy.

What you confuse is fact with bluster. Iran has made many threats and has been the source of much chest banging and just general shadow boxing. But bluster and bellicose bafoonary aside, Iran has to be judged for what it is. it is a third rate power, somewhat weaker than Thailand or Taiwan, and somewhat stronger than Syria or Sri lanka.

nobinPoddywodder @ 10/13/06 12:32:36

But Nobin, you fail to recognise the general Arab upheaval which would escalate if Israel attacked Iran. It really would be like poking a stick in the hornet’s nest.

tenbob @ 10/13/06 12:37:02

Don’t worry your head about the Arabs, Israel exists, that is the ultimate humiliation. They have been living that humiliation for decades. They blow themselves up over it, the refuse to modernize over it, they even support bin laden and the islao-fascists over it.

I really doubt if you can make the Arab ‘street’ any madder than they are. And I use the term mad to mean both the American and British meaning of the term.

nobinPoddywodder @ 10/13/06 12:41:52

right, so, arab nations are not capable of posing a threat and no one really ends up challenging the US and allies, and the Allies move in, subjigate The Middle East for control over dwindling oil and gas reserves…

...WWIII or total Imperial domination…one is supposed to be better than another, nobin? don’t “worry [our] head[s]” about the arabs? um, i think i will worry about them.

doliver @ 10/13/06 14:08:06

doliver, you need a bit of a fact check on a few things.

The Allies do not subjugate anyone. If anything they are force that puts pressure on Arab governments to modernize their institutions and bring Democracy.

The Arabs are not a monolithic people. Arabs are divided. Many middle class Arabs support modernization and oppose Islamo-fascism. Islamo-fascism is a reactionary force against modernization.

‘Imperial domination’ is a myth. It is part of the anti-West rhetoric but doesn’t exist in the real sense.

nobinPoddywodder @ 10/13/06 15:38:53

nobin, I am totally floored by your inarguable knowledge of middle eastern politics and culture. really. seriously. i like, totally mean that.

A few shtoogs throwing stones at an Israeli vehicle doesn’t prove anything. The fact that they are throwing stones in fact does show one thing. That Israel does show restraint.

I don’t recall ever seeing any photos of North Korean reformers throwing stones at the PRNC police. Now that I think about it, I have never seen snaps of Iraqi citizens before 2003 protesting saddam’s regime. I could be wrong.

btw Izzy says hi.
